Choosing a Locale

The first time FundOS opens, before anything else, it shows the locale setup screen. You cannot proceed until you save a locale. This is the only setup step that cannot be skipped.

When creating a new database, FundOS checks your operating system’s locale settings and attempts to select a matching currency and percentage preset automatically. Currency is matched by ISO currency code and percentage by language code. If no match is found — for example, if your currency or language is not among the presets — FundOS defaults to USD and English. Check the selections before saving and adjust them if needed.

Locale settings control how numbers are displayed throughout FundOS. Most of them are cosmetic — you can change the symbol, separators, and negative format at any time without affecting your data. Scale is the exception: it determines how currency amounts are stored internally, and changing it after you have entered data would corrupt those values. Set it correctly now.

Currency

The Currency dropdown offers seven presets: USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, AUD, JPY, and CNY. Selecting a preset fills in all the fields automatically.

If your currency is not in the list, select Custom and fill in the fields yourself.

  • Scale is how many subdivisions your currency has. The US dollar divides into 100 cents, the British pound into 100 pence, the Kuwaiti dinar into 1000 fils. The Japanese yen has no subdivision, so it uses scale 1. Set this to match your currency and do not change it later.
  • Symbol is the currency symbol displayed alongside amounts.
  • Thousands separator and Decimal separator control how large numbers are formatted.
  • Symbol position sets whether the symbol appears before or after the amount.
  • Negative format controls how negative amounts are shown: leading minus -$3.25, trailing minus $3.25-, parentheses ($3.25), or angle brackets <$3.25>.

The preview at the bottom left updates as you make changes so you can see exactly how amounts will appear.

Percentage

The Percentage section controls how percentages are displayed. The available presets are en (English: 42.3%), de (German: 42,3%), and fr (French: 42,3 %). The preview at the bottom right shows an example.

Example: Setting Up for Peru

Alex’s friend uses FundOS in Peru. Peru’s currency is the Sol, which is not in the preset list, so she selects Custom and fills in the fields:

  • Scale: 100
  • Symbol: S/
  • Thousands separator: ,
  • Decimal separator: .
  • Symbol position: Before
  • Negative format: Leading minus

With those settings, a negative amount displays as -S/3.25 and a large amount displays as S/1,234.56. For percentage, Spanish notation uses a comma with no space before the percent sign 42,3%, which matches the de preset most closely, so she selects that.

Saving

Click Save when the preview looks right. FundOS will open to the main screen and you can start setting up your accounts and funds.
